Trip aboard the Belle of Louisville
by, Capt. Eric Grubb
In March of 2014, Capt. Mark Doty, Master of the Belle of Louisville, gave a tour to the Port KY-sponsored OUPV and Master course put on by TrueCourse Captain's School.
The timing was fortunate, as the Belle had just had her two new steam pistons installed, and all her hatches were openned for a major USCG inspection.
There are a lot of pictures and descriptions of the Belle out there, but here are a few pages of things you don't usually get to see:
Above, the steam powered capistan on the bow.
Below, some pictures of the Belle's earlier years as the Idlewild 1914-1948 then the Avalon 1948-1962.
Above, a diagram showing the travels of the excursion vessel Avalon. Would you believe that Capt. Doty cut out that piece of wood when he was 19!
Below, the firebox of the Belle, located aft of the main stairwell.
The flames around the burner tubes extend 40' to the aft.
Above, one of the chain-driven repeaters from the bridge.
