January, 2011

Greetings! Here are a few notes as the daylight grows longer and we look forward to the warmer weather:

Services

With the good response to advertising requests from several of our local businesses, I have decided to reactivate the site's "Services" link. You can check out the complete listing of local marine services under the "Services" tab of the Port KY website.

Also, please take a moment to thank our business sponsors for supporting this site. Their help has made it possible for me to keep you informed, maintain the website and forum, and publish information such as the "Port KY River Cards."

Here is a link to the listing of Marine Services: link

Captain's Class in March

Capt. Ron Getter from True Course Captain's School has been busy talking to boaters interested in getting their OUPV or Master licenses next Spring. Visit the "Captain's Blog" for more information on their upcoming class here in Louisville, sponsored by Port KY and Kentuckiana Yacht Sales. link

What's Happening on the Port KY River Forum?

Even though the marinas are almost frozen-in, the forum has been a good place for our boaters to get their "boat fix." Recent discussions include upcoming summertime lock closures, proposed Cove activity in Utica, and winter projects. After visiting an electronics market in Shenzhen, for example, I have some new ideas for converting my interior lighting to LED fixtures.

Also on the forum is a private discussion group for members of the Rose Island Yacht Club. If you're a member, let me know and I can turn-on your access to the sub-group. There is the capability to expand this to other marinas if we have enough interest.

From William Glass (Marina News Notes, RIYC)

"If anything was to freeze and break, it probably took place in the past month. Anything frozen solid won't leak. Now that we're thawing is when those busted items begin to leak."

"If you're in the water, this would be a good time to check your bilge areas. Also, ice and snow on the decks will begin to melt before the deck drains, window tracks and scuppers, causing the water to take another path--like into the cabin and bilge."

Construction Dust

As the site evolves, I found the need to change some of the behind-the-scenes structure. While it should be transparent to you, some files that used to end in ".html" now end in ".php", which may cause a little trouble if you have bookmarks within the site.

To fix these bookmarks, simply navigate to the main menu and find the page you're looking for to make a new bookmark. If you're really computer savvy, you could just change the extension on the file name. For example, river.html is now river.php

Overall, the site is faster-loading. If you have "www.PortKY.com" bookmarked and start at the main page, you will not notice a difference. Hope this helps!

Future Events:

Louisville Boat, RV & Sportshow
January 26-30, 2011

National Houseboat Expo
March 18-20, 2011

Thunder Over Louisville

Speaking of the boat show, what are your plans? Are you buying, selling or holding on to what you have? In our case, we reduced the price on our brokered cruiser in anticipation of some future plans, and we're excited to see what the new year will bring. Interest rates are still low, so there are some good opportunities out there.

That's all for now. Be careful on those slippery docks, and I look forward to seeing you at the show!
