Greetings Louisville Boaters!

River Convoy

Jerry Hay*, Riverlorian and publisher of the Ohio River Guide Book, is organizing a trip to the Kentucky River on the 2nd weekend in June. He plans to start at Six Mile Island and overnight by Lock 1 on the KY River, which is near Carrolton. There are too many details to include here, so for information on Jerry's convoy visit our forum or Jerry's website. link

Would you like a preview of the scenery? Visit our "Featured Articles" for a look at a trip I took up there in 2010. link

America's Boating Course

The following was sent in by the Louisville Sail and Power Squadron:

There will be two class options for the spring at the Harrods Creek Fire Department, 8905 US Hwy 42, Prospect, KY. These are:

Wednesday nights beginning February 16th, 7 PM to 9 PM for five weeks

Monday nights beginning March 21st, 7 PM to 9 PM for five weeks

These classes meet Kentucky and Indiana boating license requirements. The $50 cost includes course materials and six month LSPS membership. Course materials include a 244 page full-color textbook, student CD, and Digital charting DVD with software and all United States charts. Families may share course materials.

United States Power Squadron certified instructors introduce students to all aspects of boating from hull types and safety requirements to rules of the road and the proper use of marine radios. The fifth week of class includes an overview of charts and piloting.

The United States Power Squadron is America's largest non-profit boating organization dedicated to safe boating through education. The Louisville Sail and Power Squadron was chartered in 1959 as a unit of the United States Power Squadrons (USPS). LSPS promotes safe boating through education, civic service and fraternal activities.

To register, visit the LSPS website link or call 502-228-7227.

Captain's Class in March

Capt. Ron Getter from True Course Captain's School has been busy talking to boaters interested in getting their OUPV or Master licenses next Spring. Visit the "Captain's Blog" for more information on their upcoming class here in Louisville, sponsored by Port KY and Kentuckiana Yacht Sales. link

The rumor mill has it that we'll have a new dining option on Harrod's Creek this spring. Check back for more details as they become public. Meanwhile, I look forward to the spring views from Captain's Quarters*.

Port KY River Cards

I had a few hundred "River Cards" left over from 2010, which were distributed at the boat show. I'm about ready to order another 2,000 for the spring, and am open to suggestions for improvements.

Do you have anything you'd like to see on the next set? Send your ideas via the "Feedback" page on the website or by replying to this e-mail. link

I was recently asked if I planned to retire from my income from Port KY. It's been a lot of work, but it's also been a lot of fun. To answer the question, it is more of a challenge to break even. Having said that, I enjoy the work, and will continue to grow the site as sponsorships and local marine advertising allow. As always, I am very appreciative of those who help the site. link

New Boat?

Purchase a new boat in 2011? There has been some discussion on the PortKY River Forum recently regarding the need for USCG documentation vs. state registration for KY.

That sounds like a good idea for a future article. Meanwhile, tune into the forum for details. link
