August, 2013

As I type this, it's a pleasant 72 degrees outside, and we've been blessed with some great weather for the first few days of Fall. The Breeze has come and gone, and many boaters are heading north to JoJo's for a new place to visit on the Indiana Side of the river.

Many of you are preparing for Madison's Chautauqua Festival of Art on the 28th and 29th. Others are still enjoying nearly perfect conditions locally, with the leaves starting to show hints of autumn colors.

In our family, we saw our favorite Sea Ray, a 210 Sundeck, go to a nice new family, and we're one step closer to "the next" boat.

From the Louisville Sail and Power Squadron

Greg Weeter, Riverlands Marine Surveyors/Consultants, Inc., will speak on the dangers of electrocution and drowning around the marinas. This is a program that you should not miss – for your safety and the safety of those around you!

We'd like to congratulate Capt. Joe Frith and his new bride, Theresa, on their recent marriage. The ceremony was held at the Creekside Marina on Harrods Creek on Saturday the 21st.

It was a "come as you are" event that was enjoyed by a large group of boaters and family. After the vows, they celebrated into the late afternoon. Later, Capt. Joe and his Admiral escaped to their honeymoon aboard the "After Math," which was last spotted downtown before it made it back to its home slip. Congrats again Joe and Theresa!

2014 OUPV and Master Captain Class

Captain Ron Getter of True Course Captains School is pleased to inform us that they have enough enrollees in the March, 2014 OUPV and Master Captain's Course to make it a "go."

This course, hosted annually by Port KY, is a great place for well-seasoned boaters who have an interest in obtaining their captain's license to round-out their knowledge and get the credential that goes with it. Some people get their captain's licenses to help supplement their income, while others enjoy the learning experience.

About Water Step: Water Step (formally EDGE Outreach) is a Louisville based 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to bring clean drinking water to developing communities and disaster environments around the world.

They work every day to put an end to the global water crisis by training and empowering ordinary people to provide safe and sustainable water, sanitation, health, and hygiene solutions in their own communities. Since 2001, Water Step has impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in more than 23 countries, including Haiti, Kenya, India, Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica.

When Water Step staff and volunteers travel to a developing community to build training centers and install these systems, they also teach nationals how to diagnose their water problems, operate the purification system, repair broken hand pumps, and educate them on effective health and hygiene practices. Loop Visitors

Louisville continues to be a great destination for Great Loop boaters as they adventure the Western River system. Recently, the "Kumbaya," a 59-foot custom yacht, stopped by Tumbleweed after its initial launch in Cincinnati.

Her unique design features a tunnel hull system that houses twin screws powered by 75 hp. diesels. She gets an astounding 6 mpg at an 8 kt. cruise. Onboard equipment also includes a desalinization system for drinking water, as well as two mopeds housed in the garage area for getting around town.
